Oral interview with Admiral James S. Gracey, relating to his forty-one years in the U.S. Coast Guard, spanning the period from the end of World War II to the Ronald Reagan presidency. Topics include Gracey's training at sea onboard the square riggers Danmark and Eagle; commanding the Loran station at Yakutat, Alaska; practicing his seagoing craft in the cutter Barataria and in command of the buoy tender Mariposa; breaking ice in the Hudson River, racing pell-mell down Manhattan's East River, and colliding with a lighthouse, all onboard the Mariposa; Gracey's work with billets ashore; his postgraduate education at the Harvard Business School; the importance of communication, interpersonal relations, and creative problem solving in administrative leadership roles; the conversion of Governors Island, in New York Harbor, from an Army fort to a Coast Guard base in the mid-1960s; women and minorities in the Coast Guard, operations at the 2nd Coast Guard District in St. Louis, Mo., the ninth Coast Guard District in Cleveland, Ohio, and at Governors Island; Coast Guard search and rescue and law enforcement missions; Coast Guard participation in the 1983 Grenada relief operations and intercepting Haitians at sea attempting to flee to the United States; Coast Guard budget issues; and oil spills, oil pollution of water, and water quality issues.
